I am lucky enough to have relatively clear skin so I get asked about my skincare routine pretty regularly.
My skin wasn’t always so easy to manage; from ages 13 to 21 I suffered from regular bouts of acne which have caused permanent scaring on my temples and jaw line. Luckily my facial hair covers my jaw line but I am still self conscious about my skin.
I spent a lot of time and money trying the classic acne products that a lot of my friends swore by, but it took years until I found the products that worked for me. The best products are often the simplest; I prefer clear ingredients and straightforward branding; so I’m always in control of what’s going onto and into my skin.
My Winter daily skincare routine:
When I need to be photo ready I prefer to take my time with my skin routine. Starting with Malin+Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser, followed by their Replenishing Face Serum and their Vitamin E Face Moisturizer. I tend to stick to only certain tried and tested brands that I know will work well together. I’ve always thought that using loads of different brands and ingredients is not the best for your skin. This is probably wrong but this theory has been working for me so far!
If my skin is breaking out I use products containing small amounts of acid to clear any dead skin, bacteria and dirt. I prefer acids to facial scrubs as (despite the word ‘acid’ being a pretty scary one) they are often gentler on the skin. Certain *cough* apricot scrubs *cough* can cause irritation and therefore MORE acne. I am obsessed with the Malin+Goetz Glycolic Acid Pads and use them twice a week to make sure all the London grubbiness has completely gone.
For an emergency one-spot treatment I use Mario Badescu Drying Lotion as it does what it says on the bottle, dries out any brewing bad boys that have come to ruin my day.
Sometimes when I get back from working in The London I like to give my face a treat to make up for all the London grime. This is when I use the combo of Sunday Riley’s Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser and Good Genes Treatment as a way to deep cleanse my skin and make me feel fresh!
If I need to shave I will always do it in the evening, this way I can take my time and make sure I’m being sensitive towards my skin. This also gives my skin time to recover overnight, avoiding rash or red marks first thing in the morning.
I usually apply a heavy duty moisturiser or Kiehls’ Midnight Recovery Concentrate before bed. I have quite dry skin so an overnight oil helps keep my skin looking fresh in the mornings.
Lips and hands are a great opportunity to experiment with new brands as well as a way to test out higher end products without breaking the bank! At the moment I’m using Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Protectant and it’s so good for chapped lips. I also have been using L’Occitane’s Shea Whipped Hand Cream daily, I keep one in my bag, one at home and one at my desk – I’m addicted! But if my hands aren’t dry or cracked I use Aesop’s Hand Balm as it smells amazing!
